State of American Energy Q&A: Access to Domestic Resources

As a part of our ongoing efforts to answer your energy-related questions, here is question from Paul L.:

Question: With all the oil and gas we have here, why can't America provide all that we need instead of buying it from overseas?

Answer: Great question, Paul.

America does, in fact, have tremendous oil and natural gas resources. We estimate that offshore alone, 101 barrels of oil and 480 trillion cubic feet of natural gas can be developed safely and in a way that protects the environment. Onshore, the numbers are similar― 88 billion barrels of oil and 654 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

With the right policies, increased production of oil and natural gas can create 1.4 million jobs and generate an additional $800 in government revenue by 2030. In addition to this, policies that promote the development of our domestic oil and natural gas, as well as oil sands from Canada, would go a long way in strengthening America’s energy security.
