State of American Energy Q&A: Future U.S. Energy Needs

We received many thoughtful questions before, during and after our Energy Nation webcast, held on January 18. As we were not able to address all of them, we will provide additional answers here on news feed over the coming weeks.

As a part of our ongoing efforts to answer your energy-related questions, here is a question from Steve:

Question: How will renewable energy play a part in our country’s energy needs?

Answer: Between 2000 and 2010,  the U.S. oil and natural gas industry has invested more than $2 trillion in U.S. capital projects to advance all forms of energy―including alternatives and renewables―to ensure America has reliable and affordable energy for decades to come.

On Oct. 20, 2011, Kyle Isakower API Vice President for Regulatory and Economic Policy said  in a press conference that "…the oil and natural gas industry is helping to develop the alternative technologies that will play an increasing and important role in our energy future – even as it continues supplying the oil and natural gas that government projections show will be our nation's primary energy source for decades to come.”

Currently, oil and natural gas supply 60 percent of America’s energy needs, and despite the significant growth of renewables and improvements in energy efficiency, projections estimate that more than half of the world’s energy demand in 2035 will still be met by oil and natural gas.

With energy consumption expected to grow in the coming decades, America needs access to its untapped domestic resources, along with a robust energy portfolio including renewables and alternatives.
