State of American Energy Q&A: Hydraulic Fracturing is a Proven Technology

As a part of our ongoing efforts to answer your energy-related questions, here is a question from NSchmitt (Energy Mom) submitted during our live webcast:

Question: Opponents to hydraulic fracturing point to Pavillon, WY and Dimock, PA.  What examples can we point to where hydraulic fracturing has been done really well?

Answer: Hydraulic fracturing is not only a proven technology to safely develop natural gas resources; it is also bringing new life to cities across America where development means new jobs and a more stable economy. In Bismarck, N.D., a town where oil and natural gas development is a driving force, the current unemployment rate just below three percent. ABC News also reported last October, how the Marcellus Shale formation in Steubenville, Ohio has created hundreds of jobs in this city alone. Hydraulic fracturing has helped to make North Dakota the fourth-largest oil producer, just behind Texas, Alaska and California, with a current production pace of averaging 445,000 barrels per day in August 2011.

Industry success stories are not limited to this list. Hydraulic fracturing is a well-regulated, proven technology that has been in use for more than 60 years in more than one million U.S. wells, and has safely produced more than seven billion barrels of oil and 600 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
