As a part of our ongoing efforts to answer your energy-related questions, here is question from Michelle P.
Question: What are the available resources out there to learn more about this fracking we are all hearing about? What are the risks to our aquifers?
Answer: Hydraulic fracturing is a technology that has existed for more than sixty years, making it possible to produce oil and natural gas in places where conventional technologies are ineffective.
Fracking has been used in more than one million U.S. wells, and has safely produced more than seven billion barrels of oil as well as more than 600 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. With oil and natural gas reserves located thousands of feet below the water table and pumped through cement-encased wells, hydraulic fracturing is a safe and reliable way to procure oil and natural gas.
